For the eminent role he played during the French Revolution, which established the future of France in the modern world, Robespierre is unanimously recognised as a significant figure of our history. Well beyond our borders, the name of Arras is associated with its most illustrious citizen and it is surprising that no place has yet been properly dedicated to his memory in his natal city. In 1990 the Municipal Council bought the house in which the man who governed Revolutionary France between 1793 and 1794 had lived with the intention of opening a Robespierre Museum. This house, known as the “Maison Robespierre”, was later renovated by the “Compagnons du Tour de France”, a French association that organises apprenticeships for young people and that have been using it until now for their own purposes. The undersigned ask the city of Arras to urgently dedicate the “Maison Robespierre” to its original intention so that it becomes a museum to help not only the people of Arras but visitors from all over the world to know better the history of the French Revolution and of the man who – despite different opinions - remains one of its key figures.
